Notre Dame Hockey prevails with a 3-1 victory over Northern Michigan

Coach Jackson, Chayse Primeau, and Ryan Bischel speak to the media after Notre Dame Hockey’s 3-1 victory.

Notre Dame got off to a quick start against Northern Michigan.  After an early penalty by NMU, Notre Dame’s Chayse Primeau took advantage on the power play. The grad transfer from University of Nebraska, Omaha, scored his first goal for the IRISH.  Just about two minutes later, Trevor Janicke got the puck past NMU’s Halasz, putting the IRISH up 2-0.

In the second period, the Wildcats were on a power play and were able to get one past Ryan Bischel.  (Who we were told by Katherine Harvath, Associate Athletics Communications Director for Hockey, ended up coming up 2 saves short of a career best, stopping 36 of 37 of the shots he faced.)  Shortly after the NMU Goal, Notre Dame’s Ryan Helliwell put the IRISH up 3-1 with his very first collegiate goal.

The third period was a fight, Literally! In an uncharacteristic showing by the IRISH, there were penalties galore, and it almost looked like they couldn’t fit another player in the box.  Thanks to a stellar performance by goalie Ryan Bischel, the IRISH prevailed with a 3-1 victory over the Wildcats of Northern Michigan.   The teams return to the ice Sunday at 5:00pm for game 2 of the weekend series.

Press Conference Quick Hits:

Coach Jeff Jackson:

*I thought we played really well early on.  You know how the old saying goes, ‘The worst lead in hockey is two goals.’ I thought they elevated their game and we did not. We ended up turning pucks over, and then taking penalties.  Those are two bad combinations to try and play with a lead.  Fortunately we got that big goal by Helliwell.  Makes it a two goal lead again.”

“They (NMU) tried to goad us into taking penalties.  We fell for it.  Their power play is extremely good, and it has been up to this point, and they try to get on the power play, some of it by taking dives, stuff like that, and we got to have more discipline.  The officials have to understand how to call a penalty when a guy’s going down unnecessarily.”

Chayse Primeau:

*(On choosing to come to Notre Dame)   “Last year, obviously, I entered the transfer portal.  Right when Notre Dame got in contact with me, I knew this was a special place.  Came on my visit, and obviously, I ended up here.  I love it here.  So far it’s incredible.  But then tonight, it was good.  Started out pretty good.  The game kinda got away a little bit, but Bisch (goal Ryan Bischel) stayed strong back there for us, and we got the win.”

*(On his first goal in an IRISH sweater):  “Yeah.  It was a good one.  It was a good entry off a breakout.  They were working it up the top, and it went down to Jesse, and he’s been doing that play a couple times.  I just knew if I kinda get open, I had a chance at it, and that’s what happened.”

Ryan Bischel:

*(on coming back after getting pulled at Air Force last week):  “I really just focused once we got back from Colorado.  I really just focused on having a really good week of practice.   Coach preaches a lot that your confidence on the weekends comes from the way that you practice each day, so I made sure that I was prepared for practice every day and that made sure I was confident going into tonight.  The boys played good in front of me, so yeah it was good.”

*(on his play during the “march” to the penalty box by the IRISH during the 2nd period):   “Our PK stepped up big time tonight.  That was something that we struggled with that first weekend.  It was a good step so I was excited about that.

I think one thing we need to focus on is to play a full 60.  We showed glimpses in Denver, we showed glimpses at Air Force, and we showed glimpses tonight.  I think we just need to find a way to harness a full 60 minutes.”
